Laying On Of Hands & Anointing; Does It Work & Is It Biblical?

August 2, 2008 – 9:09 pm

Let me begin by saying that one other time before July 26, 2008 I was the recipient of the “laying on of hands and a prayer for healing a physical injury.”  An explanation might well be in order.  I had fallen several years ago and broke my left hip into what is called a “three-part fracture.”  Simply put, you have three separations between four pieces of bone.

Most bones in a healthy individual heal within ten to twelve weeks.  It varies from person to person.  Age, smoking, drugs, etc. can have a varying effect, or in some cases, no effect at all.  However, if there is no sign of healing by the fourteenth to sixteenth week it is considered a “non-union” and other healing agendas need to be considered.

Well, my fractures had reached that point for no apparent reason other than the degree of trauma.  The Orthopedic Surgeon agreed to wait 30 days before turning to more surgery as a solution to the problem.  So, for a reference a full set of x-rays were taken and an appointment to return in exactly 30 days was made.

A few days later my wife asked me right before retiring for the night if she could pray for my fractures to be completely healed by the time we returned to the Surgeon.  I had never been involved in the “laying on of hands” and neither had my wife.  At that point, I figured it couldn’t hurt.  Now there is a “strong” faith in the healing powers of our Jesus!

As I lay there on the bed, she placed her hands on my leg in the area of the fractures and began to pray to the lord to heal the fractures before we returned to the Surgeon.  It wasn’t long or drawn out, in fact, it was simple and sincere.  I should tell you, I had a copy of the x-rays taken on the last visit we had up until that point.

Nothing was said and no further outward action was taken by either my wife or me.  We just waited for the return visit to the Surgeon.

That dreaded day finally arrived.  We went to Radiology first and had a complete set of x-rays taken.  On the way down to the Surgeons’ office, I was trying to read the x-rays via the hall lights as my wife pushed my wheelchair.  It was hard to see under those conditions, but eight years as a surgical rep told me something had changed – but I could not be sure.

We finally arrived at the doctor’s exam room and he arrived a few minutes after we did.  The tech had already laid the x-rays on a table next to the “light box.”  The doctor began throwing them up on the light box and then he stood there motionless for what seemed several minutes.  He turned to my wife and I and said, “If I had not seen these and the ones from thirty days ago, I would not have believed it.”

I looked at him and said, “That’s because my wife laid her hands on me and prayed for a healing to take place before today.”  The Surgeon stared at me for a moment and with a little smirk said, “I’d prefer to call it an abnormal healing!”

I have copies of both sets of x-rays that are dated and authenticated.  So that was my only involvement with this type of faith and belief in Jesus’ Healing Power in this world.

On July 27, 2008 I attended a Christian Presentation on “Journaling.”  To be honest, I was really hoping I would run into someone there that was a member of a local Christian Writing Group.  I do not “journal” myself.  There were, I believe, eight people including the two instructors who attended.  One other man and myself were representative of the male gender.

The meeting was extremely informative and well presented.  The last exercise at the end was for each of us to chronicle something we earnestly seek from God.  The instructor asked if any one would care to share their piece (I do not think she really thought anyone would, due to the privacy of these thoughts).  However, God has Blessed me with a big mouth and limited common sense.  So, I held up my hand.

I read my request to God and it brought tears to my eyes, because I have desired this thing to happen at least one more time before I go “Home.”  I am not even sure who asked me, but someone said would you like us to have a group prayer for you?  I answered, “Yes.”

Before I really realized what was happening, all six of my Christian Sisters and one Brother were around me while I’m seated in my chair still.  I heard one of the Instructors ask if this other person had the “oil.”  She answered, “Yes.”

I have never heard so many different prayers being said at one time and yet they, together, all made perfect sense!  Then they began praying individually.  At one point, I felt oil being placed on my forehead.  Tears flowed freely from my eyes.  It wasn’t any specific thing that I felt physically, it was an immense release spiritually, followed by a filling of my soul with a new and stronger spirit – I believe that of the Holy Spirit!

I am not sure how long it lasted, two, maybe three minutes.  I just know when they removed their hands, I shouted, “I’m free!”  I don’t know why I chose those words, because they were not relevant to my request of God.  It didn’t matter, because it felt right and it felt GOOD!  Will my life change in the long term – I do not know.  I just know I feel a much closer bond between my spirit and God’s Holy Spirit.

Well, the above addresses the “Does It Work” part of our title.  Now for the “Is It Biblical?” part.

Instead of me babbling on let me just give you a few scriptures I was able to come up with in a relatively short time.  Scripturally, let your spirit be the judge.  I would recommend a short prayer before you begin reading the following scriptures.  There are a number referencing the “laying on of hands,” but I am citing just five – you may want to seek more in your Bible.

So, here they are: 1.  1 Timothy 4:14-161 Timothy 4:14-16

These are often taken out of context, simply to show that the tradition did in fact exist and is verified within the Bible.

I pray for each of you that at a time in your life when your spirit, soul or body needs the Healing Grace of the Holy Spirit of God, there will be one or more that can open you to this miracle of Salvation and Healing!  I give to you my love in Christ and my blessing for your Joy, Happiness and Safety in the Holy Spirit of God Almighty until we come together again!

Love in Christ,
