The “Real” Passion of Christ

February 6, 2011 – 11:18 am

Pre-Post “Look Back “

Back in 2008 we looked at the “real” Passion of Christ!  For over 2000 years, Christians have universally believed that the incredible physical suffering that Jesus endured and, ultimately His Crucifixion, was “The Passion of Christ.”  Is it really relevant or important if maybe His physical suffering to give each of us Salvation is not the “whole story?”

In a word, “YES!”

If paying the “ultimate price” is the entire reality of Jesus’ Passion, then what about the soldier who throws his or herself on a hand grenade to protect their fellow soldiers?  What about the “patriot” that suffers unbelievable torture to protect other fellow patriots from exposure to possible death from their enemies?  This is not an attempt to diminish the sufferings of our Lord.  It is an offering of a much larger reality and truth!

The Holy Spirit has led me to the understanding of what our Jesus truly gave up for our Salvation!  I am placing before you the progression of Jesus’ life that takes Him from His Inception to His Ascension.  Then, as a follow-up, I will place the supporting scriptures below this piece.  I pray your spirit will seek and understand this incredible Truth.   It’s only after this Spiritual Understanding takes place that we can finally understand how incredible His “Spiritual Sacrifice” is to our Eternal Salvation!!!  So my Brother and Sister, here we go!!!

The “Real” Passion of Christ!!!

Jesus, as a human, was Conceived of The Holy Spirit of God and the human woman, Mary, who was a virgin.(1)  Life was “Breathed” into Him by God His Father, as it is with all humans at their birth.(2)  Jesus grew till his early thirties as a normal human with one exception – He never sinned.  No, not one time!(3)

Jesus was, to some degree, aware of a very “Special Relationship” between He and God.  Remember, both Mary and her human husband, Joseph, were contacted by God’s angels to make them aware of God’s Desires.(4)  They raised Jesus to know of much of this, even during His childhood.  In His early thirties Jesus became “Spiritually Aware” that His Heavenly Father wanted Him to be “One” with The Holy Spirit as it had always been for Jesus when He lived in Heaven.(5)  So Jesus received The Holy Spirit within His human body after being physically Baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River.(6)

Jesus knew from Old Testament prophesies that He had been sent to provide Salvation to those souls who had already died to the world, who were in the world at that time and those who would enter the world later.(7)  He knew His human death would ultimately release all willing sinners from the grip of certain eternal death in hades*.(8)

Jesus spoke to others of these prophesies of a Savior coming into this world so there could be Salvation for all sinners.(9)  Further, for His Sacrifice to provide a true, meaningful and Eternal Salvation for all sinners, He had to let sin, in the form of death, touch His human body.  Letting the sin of death take His human life would be the one and only time that Jesus would commit a worldly sin.(10)

In the Garden of Gethsemane He asked His Heavenly Father three times to “take this cup from Me.”(11)  Jesus knew He would have to “sacrifice” His human life and body for the forgiveness of all human sin.  However, it would appear that during His Prayers to His Father, He realized that not just His body would die on His Cross, but in fact, His soul would go to hades!  Ultimately, His soul would suffer a “second death” or eternal death in the hell that will be created after the Final Judgement.  This realization was so devastating that He began to sweat “blood” during His prayers to His Father!(12)  But as He spoke these words He immediately asked that not His, but His Father’s Will be done!(13)  Out of His Love for His Son, God sent an angel from Heaven to strengthen Jesus there in the Garden of Gethsemane!(14)  Please remember, Jesus was still human and subject to human weaknesses.

The officers of the temple guard arrested and took Jesus into custody shortly after He offered up these prayers to His Father.  For a day He was beaten, scourged, spat upon and reviled.  Then He was nailed to the Cross to die.(15)

He hung there for nine hours.(16)  Those on Golgotha did not realize that His human body could not die as long as The Holy Spirit remained inside of His soul.

From the beginning of this world, as in the Garden of Eden, sin can only touch humans.(17)  Once Jesus “gave up The Ghost” (The Holy Spirit of God), only then could the sin of death touch his human body and soul.(18)  This became possible because His human body and soul were no longer connected directly to God through God’s Holy Spirit.

His human condition made itself known when He cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”  It was only a few minutes later that He cried out again when He knew the time had arrived.  At that very moment, He gave up the Holy Spirit of God Who He had been with since before Creation.(19)  Now that His soul was empty and no longer possesed by  The Holy Ghost, He allowed His human body and soul to be touched by the sin of death.(20)  At that moment, the sun disappeared, many graves yielded their dead back to life and the Veil in The Temple in Jerusalem was ripped from top to bottom!

But here is the reality that many of us have missed: the release of God’s Holy Spirit from within His human body and soul meant so much more to Jesus than the mere loss of His worldly life.  It meant that His human soul would be separated from His Father and The Holy Spirit, not to mention His soul going to hades!(21)

You see any time a person willingly gives up, refuses or chooses not to recognize The Holy Spirit’s claim of oneness with their soul, it is considered to be blaspheming The Holy Spirit.  This is the one unpardonable sin in all of this world!(22)  For Jesus, eternity in the non-physical world meant that “a thousand years is as a day and a day is as a thousand years.”( ) Jesus, at the request of His Father, willingly gave up The Holy Spirit, and thus, knew upon taking that action that He was accepting that His human soul would ultimately spend, by the world’s standards: three days in Hades. Never having been separated from His Father’s Holy Spirit and thus His Father from before the beginning of time, He must have seen it as an almost Eternal separation!  God asked this “of His only Begotten Son” because of His love for His earthly children and Jesus complied.

Once in Hades, Jesus’ soul preached to the others who found themselves in “the prison.” After three earth days passed, but not perceived like that by Jesus, His soul was “Quickened!” ( ) This meaning that The Holy Spirit, untouchable by sin, was sent by God to retrieve His Son, Jesus from hades. He then spent forty days with His Disciples, relatives and friends. ( ) After this time passed, Jesus ascended into Heaven to sit on the Right-hand of God, His Eternal Father! ( )

Something happened the day of Jesus’ Crucifixion that much of the world would consider insignificant.  That day on Golgotha there were two other men being crucified with Jesus.(23)  One, while hanging there on his cross, accepted Jesus as The Son of God.  Jesus told him that he would be with Him that very day in Paradise.  Now did Jesus think His human soul would join the human soul of this new believer in Paradise that very day?  No, Jesus knew that the new believer who was about to suffer human death would have his soul go to paradise that very day with The Holy Spirit that Jesus was about to release from within Himself.(24)  Jesus knew all too well that His human soul would not be on its way to paradise that day – but to hades !

For Jesus’ sacrifice to even come close to accommodating the sin of this world through all of time, He had to give it all!  Jesus gave up His Father and The Holy Spirit in a relationship that began before time even existed. He then accepted an indeterminable amount of spiritual time for His soul to be away from Heaven – He did this for you, me and all who seek Eternal Salvation for their sins.

God knew that because of this unmatched sacrifice, He could give Salvation to those who made up the humanity of this world and that would also include His Son, Jesus!  But the human Jesus couldn’t know this because of His human limitations.  Yes, He carried God’s Holy Spirit within Him, but He still was human.  God knew how utterly “selfless” Jesus was at that very moment hanging there on His Cross of sin!  This was the only way any sacrifice could be reconcilable with all the sins of this world.  The “unpardonable sin,” by Spiritual Law, sent all blasphemers of The Holy Spirit to hades and of course, at the end of time it would be eternal hell.(25)

God is The Creator of all Spiritual Law in the universe.  Being its Creator, Spiritual Law will always be subject to His Decision as to its application and result.  Just as God asked Abraham to offer his son Isaac as a sign of his faith, the obvious end to the situation was changed after the faithful intent had been accomplished.  As Abraham was willing to show his spiritual love for His Heavenly Father, so Jesus was willing to do the same.(26)  In and for that commitment, Jesus knew His fate!  It was totally God’s Decision to extend the very Salvation Jesus gave up His soul for to Jesus Himself!!!(27)

Jesus had completely expected, as a human, to go to hades until eternal hell became an eternal reality.  And, in fact, this was necessary to complete the sacrifice.  However God, after three days, sent the Strength of His Holy Spirit, who had already won the battle with satan on earth, into hades to save His Son!(28)

Once Jesus was “raised from the dead,” He briefly spent time with His disciples, friends and family before Ascending to Heaven.(29)  He returned to His Father and The Holy Spirit in Their Home in Heaven.  His “Second Coming” is Known only to God!(30)

Please, accept this Salvation that was won for you and I – accept it and live a new life both here and soon in the Wonders of Eternal Heaven!!!

*  Hades and Hell:  Scripturally the existence of hades as a place for the dead of this world to go is spoken of in various terms.  “Prison,” “grave,” “Sheol,” and is paired with the term or description, “death.”  It is contrasted with “Heaven.”  Hell, on the other hand, will not exist until after “The Final Judgement.”  At that time, those souls whose names were not found in the “Book of Life” will be taken along with Hades itself and thrown into Hell that was formed after “The Final Judgement.”  Various theological theories imply that Hades has two areas within its confines.  One is “paradise” felt to be for the “forgiven” dead souls.  The other is thought, by some, to be Sheol or the Underworld reserved for the “unforgiven.”

**Please take the time to read an explanation of a very old document written by John Calvin called “The Apostles Creed”.  This is taken from a study by the “Institutes of the Christian Religion” and edited by John T. McNeill.  Read the section entitled: “10. The ‘Descent Into Hell’ As An Expression Of The Spiritual Torment That Christ Underwent For Us” which can be found by typing into Google the following web address: http:www.reformed.org/documents/apostles_creed.html .

Behold me 2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. 3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? lamb: or, kid 8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. 9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son. 11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen. Jehovahjireh: that is, The Lord will see, or, provide 15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time, 16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: 17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; shore: Heb. lip 18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. 19 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

For your information, I have included a version of  “The Apostles Creed”** below:

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
the third day he rose from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Bottom Line

In this piece on “The ‘Real’ Passion of Christ,” we’ve strived to use generally accepted interpretations of both words and phrases found in the scriptures.  Much of what we desire to share with you is “Holy Spirit Driven.”  In essence, we asked Him to give us that He wanted us to share with you.  But we  are humans and, unfortunately we often may without realizing it, put our own “spin” on a concept or scripture interpretation.  For that we sincerely apologize.  Bottom line, though, our Father God Loves us and Jesus has Proven that Love by His “Spiritual” and human sacrifice!  This is really all any of us need to know!  We pray for God’s Blessings to be upon you and yours and it is our prayer that you get as much “Spiritual Uplift” from reading the above as we had in preparing it for you!!!
